Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that Indonesia and Peru are deepening cooperation in smart agriculture, human resource development, and market access to boost exports of mutually beneficial, high-value products.

"We hope this relationship can foster a mutually beneficial partnership for both countries," he said after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto during a state visit by Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (August 11).

Sulaiman said the two nations have undertaken numerous initiatives under the Indonesia–Peru Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Agricultural Cooperation, signed several years ago.

Based on the agreement, future collaboration will include joint development of smart agriculture, capacity building in the agricultural sector, and improved facilitation of market access.

"This momentum is an opportunity for us to increase exports of our top agricultural products," the minister added.

The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Peru, established on August 12, 1975. During the meeting, the leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in food security.

"Today, we completed a joint declaration commemorating 50 years of cooperation. We have agreed to work together in the food, mining, energy transition, fisheries, and defense sectors," Prabowo said.

The two leaders also welcomed the signing of the Indonesia–Peru Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Completed in just 14 months, the agreement is expected to expand market access and boost trade, including in agriculture and food.

Prabowo stressed that the strategic partnership will also include cooperation in combating illegal trade, along with projects in mining, energy transition, fisheries, and defense.

Boluarte described agricultural and food cooperation as a strategic priority, noting that Peru is among the world’s top exporters of fresh fruit and superfoods such as quinoa, chia, and blueberries.

"Indonesian consumers have enjoyed Peruvian grapes and quinoa, and I am delighted to announce that Peruvian blueberries will now enter the Indonesian market," she said.

Boluarte added that Indonesia’s economic dynamism makes it Peru’s sixth-largest trading partner in Asia, while Peru ranks as the fourth-largest destination for Indonesian exports in Latin America and the Caribbean.
