Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Peru have pledged to deepen cooperation in combating the trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursors, as stated in a joint declaration marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both countries.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) in Jakarta on Monday, this commitment was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and Peru's National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs.

The MoU concerns technical cooperation in eradicating the illegal production, preparation, and trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursors.

In the declaration, Indonesia and Peru also welcomed the signing of an MoU between the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) and the Peruvian quarantine authority, Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agraria (SENASA), on cooperation regarding regulations as well as sanitary and phytosanitary certifications, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two entities.

Furthermore, both nations reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the management of technical cooperation through an inter-institutional agreement between the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation.

The declaration additionally stated that people from other countries in their respective regions could benefit from the expertise of Indonesia and Peru through trilateral cooperation that aligns with both countries' priorities of advancing inclusive and sustainable development.

Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra visited the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday for a state visit and bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Zegarra's trip marked the first official visit by a Peruvian president to Indonesia since the two countries established diplomatic relations five decades ago.
