Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has jolted Poso District in Central Sulawesi province on Sunday at 6:36 a.m. local time (UTC +8), causing damage to several structures and injuries to residents.

"According to current monitoring, we recorded 10 injuries in Masani Village, Poso Pesisir Sub-district," Central Sulawesi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency's (BPBD's) head for emergency and logistics, Andi Sembiring, stated here.

During the quake, all the victims had been attending Mass at Elim Church in the village. As the church was still under renovation, the tremor caused part of the structure to collapse.

"The victims have been referred to the Tokorondo public health center," he added.

An update from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) later reported that at least 29 residents were injured, including two in critical condition. Thirteen victims were evacuated to Poso Regional General Hospital.

Damage was also reported beyond Masani Village, including to a swallow nest structure in Ueralulu Village, a house in Lape Village, and the Al-A’la Mosque in Lanto Jaya Village, which sustained minor damage.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.0 before revising it to 5.8. The agency also reported at least 10 aftershocks.

"As of 7:10 a.m. Jakarta time, we recorded 10 aftershocks," said BMKG’s Director for Earthquake and Tsunami, Daryono, in a written statement.

BMKG confirmed that the epicenter was located 13 kilometers northwest of Poso City at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami.
