13 universities in Indonesia were recently listed as having questionable research integrity in the 2024 Research Integrity Risk Index, reflecting a research ecosystem that remains suboptimal.Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Wamendiktisaintek) Stella Christie has called on lecturers to provide greater opportunities for students to take part in research activities.
“The most important thing is how students can actively participate in research conducted by lecturers,” Stella said after attending the Campus Life Orientation for New Students (PPKMB) at Universitas Negeri Malang, East Java, on Monday.
She emphasized that research is an essential platform to sharpen critical thinking and decision-making skills, both of which are vital for students as they prepare for the workforce.
“Students will also learn time management. Pragmatically, that is what employers are looking for, based on the data,” she noted.
According to Stella, student involvement can ease lecturers’ workload through task sharing, while also improving research quality.
“This approach is expected to produce quality research, rather than focusing solely on the number of publications,” she said.
She highlighted that 13 universities in Indonesia were recently listed as having questionable research integrity in the 2024 Research Integrity Risk Index, reflecting a research ecosystem that remains suboptimal.
To address this, the government has adjusted university performance indicators and lecturers’ workloads to prioritize research quality over quantity.
On funding, Stella explained that the government encourages state-owned enterprises and private companies to contribute through a co-funding scheme.
“Research funding is allocated entirely to researchers, with 15 percent from companies and 85 percent from the ministry,” she explained.
The ministry is also mapping research needs in line with industrial demands.
“For instance, PLN requires small-scale hydro-based power plants. We identify such needs and direct them to university researchers so they can submit proposals,” Stella said.
