“Biodiversity is not only about conservation. It is also about economic growth, life, and humanity,”
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) officially launched the book "Current Status of Indonesia’s Biodiversity: Sumatra and Sulawesi Ecoregions" in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“This launch marks an important first step toward integrating biodiversity data in a comprehensive manner,” said Minister of National Development Planning and Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, during the event.

He explained that the report was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and other partners.

Rachmat emphasized that safeguarding Indonesia’s natural wealth requires collective action, noting that while the country’s biodiversity is extraordinarily rich, it faces growing threats from environmental degradation and species extinction.

“Biodiversity is not only about conservation—it’s also about economic growth, life, and humanity,” he said.

“With this book, we aim to protect our megabiodiversity so it can be preserved for future generations, both in Indonesia and globally,” he added.

Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the book also serves as a directive from Bappenas to promptly establish regulations that strengthen the management of Indonesia’s natural resources.

“Follow-up measures will include various instruments, such as government regulations, presidential decrees, and ministerial regulations, as the Ministry of Environment has been designated the lead institution,” Hanif explained.

Separately, BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting conservation and the sustainable use of Indonesia’s biodiversity.

“This is essential for advancing our future economy, which must increasingly rely on renewable and environmentally friendly local resources,” he said.
