Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing a regulation to strengthen the conservation and sustainable utilization of the country's biodiversity amid growing threats to the nation's natural wealth.

At the launch of the "Current Status of Indonesia's Biodiversity in the Sumatra and Sulawesi Ecoregions" held here on Tuesday, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq praised the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) for releasing the latest document on the current condition of the archipelago’s natural resources.

“I believe there will be several regulatory instruments that follow, including government regulations, presidential regulations, and some that will be ministerial regulations,” Nurofiq stated.

The regulation is being developed based on the Current Status of Indonesia’s Biodiversity 2024 document and additional reports for seven ecoregions, with today’s launch covering the Sulawesi and Sumatra ecoregions.

All of the documents were compiled by Bappenas in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

The regulation for protecting Indonesia's biodiversity will also be based on the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2025–2045, which was launched in July 2024.

Indonesia already has a number of laws and regulations related to biodiversity, including Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, and Law No. 32 of 2024 on the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems, as well as various other sectoral laws.

Such legal instruments are necessary, Nurofiq said, given Indonesia's recognition as one of the countries with "megabiodiversity".

Extractive industries and environmental degradation are endangering endemic flora and fauna, some of which are now critically endangered. For example, the Mahakam dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), is now critically endangered due to human activities.

“Once again, biodiversity is no longer solely Indonesia’s responsibility. Biodiversity has become a global asset that must be addressed together properly and responsibly,” Nurofiq added.
