Jakarta (ANTARA) - Central Jakarta Police announced the deployment of 1,145 joint personnel to secure a student protest outside the House of Representatives (DPR) complex on Thursday.

"Please demonstrate peacefully, avoid provocation, and refrain from burning tires, blocking roads, or damaging public facilities," Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro said.

The joint personnel were assigned to monitor the rally near the parliament complex, Condro said in a statement ahead of the demonstration, which was expected to begin around 2 p.m. local time.

According to police, protesters from the Student Movement with the People (GEMARAK) and allied organizations planned to stage the rally to oppose capitalism, imperialism, and militarism, while also "calling for an end to oligarchy."

Condro emphasized that officers securing the protest would not carry firearms and would adopt a humanist, persuasive approach.

"The police are not opponents of the demonstrators. Our presence is to serve fellow citizens exercising their right to express opinions," he said, underlining the importance of maintaining peace during the rally.

"A protest should be a space for dialogue, not disruption. Let's maintain a calm atmosphere so that the message can be heard clearly," Condro added.

Due to potential traffic disruptions, he also advised the public to avoid roads surrounding the DPR complex.
