Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry called for the strengthening of regulations and supervision of daycare centers, in response to an alleged case of aggressive behaviour against a toddler at a daycare in Surabaya.

"This case serves as a reminder to strengthen regulations, standardization, and supervision of daycare centers to prevent similar incidents from recurring," the ministry's Acting Deputy for Special Protection for Children, Ratna Susianawati, said here on Thursday.

According to her, parents must feel safe when leaving their children, and the safety of the children must be guaranteed.

Susianawati said the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of having clear standards for every child care service.

These standards include aspects of licensing, caregiving patterns, facility readiness, implementation of emergency standard operating procedure (SOP) during incidents, as well as protection of the rights of both children and parents.

The Ministry has coordinated with the East Java Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) to provide comprehensive assistance to the victim and the family.

"East Java UPTD PPA has assisted the victim’s parents during the police investigation, provided online psychological counseling to the victim’s mother who experienced anxiety, and ensured the victim’s mental and physical condition is well-monitored," Susianawati informed.

In addition, the ministry also fully supports the police in conducting the legal process related to this case.

Previously, a one-year-old toddler with the initials EJ sustained multiple injuries on her body after being placed at a daycare center in Surabaya on June 4.

The victim was allegedly hit by another toddler at the center. The following day, the victim’s parents reported the daycare owner to the East Java Regional Police, which is still conducting an investigation.
