Jakarta (ANTARA) - ASEAN law ministers, including Indonesia's Justice Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, signed a joint statement Thursday in Kuala Lumpur to strengthen cooperation in developing international commercial arbitration and mediation across the region.

The "Joint Statement by ASEAN Law Ministers on International Commercial Arbitration and Mediation Development" reaffirms member states' commitment to promoting justice, economic growth, and sustainable development through improved dispute resolution frameworks.

"This joint statement was initiated by Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN in 2025, through the Malaysian Office of the Minister of Civil Affairs, led by Dato' Seri Azalina Othman Said," Agtas said.

He outlined that the joint statement consists of three main points, namely regional economic development through alignment with international standards, the use of innovation and technology, and improving access to justice.

According to him, the aspects covered in the joint agreement fall under the duties and functions of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and align with the ministry's program to strengthen the national legal framework.

He then conveyed that his ministry is encouraging the strengthening of the national legal framework in the field of alternative dispute resolution, especially in international commercial arbitration and mediation, through the adoption of international legal standards, such as the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration.

The signing ceremony of the joint statement at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center was held as the highlight of the ASEAN Law Forum 2025, attended by all ASEAN law ministers, the ASEAN Secretary-General, the Timor-Leste Law Minister, the Japanese Law Minister, and the Prime Minister and high-ranking officials of Malaysia.
