Tandiono on Thursday explained that this regulation refers to Law Number 36 of 2012 concerning Health and Government Regulation Number 109 of 2012 concerning the protection of tobacco products for health.
He underlined that trains, like other forms of public transportation, have been designated as smoke-free zones, and therefore, are obligated to create a clean, healthy, and comfortable travel environment.
"Based on Law Number 36 of 2012 concerning Health and Government Regulation Number 109 of 2012 concerning the Protection of Materials Containing Addictive Substances in the Form of Tobacco Products for Health, public transportation, including trains, has been designated as a smoke-free zone," he remarked in a press conference on Thursday.
The smoke-free zone policy on trains is an important part of maintaining clean air and providing health protection for public transportation users, he continued.
According to him, the implementation of this regulation proves the government's consistency in enforcing regulations while maintaining the quality of public transportation services based on established health standards.
"Train travel must also be ensured to provide maximum comfort for customers, including clean and healthy air on board," he stated.
Meanwhile, the state-owned railway operator, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), also emphasized that all train services will remain smoke-free, as part of the company's efforts to ensure the comfort and safety of all customers.
KAI's Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, said that the company also continues to adhere to the smoke-free policy issued by the Ministry of Transportation in 2014.
This smoke-free policy refers to Circular Letter Number SE 29 of 2014 of the Minister of Transportation, which regulates the prohibition of smoking on public transportation, including trains.
Previously, Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Nasim Khan, proposed the provision of dedicated smoking carriages on long-distance trains. This was conveyed during a hearing with KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin on Wednesday, August 20.
