Poso, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has instructed the immediate resumption of school activities in Poso, Central Sulawesi, following the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the region last Sunday (17/8).

The instruction was delivered during his visit to earthquake victims sheltered at a football field and an elementary school in Tangkura Village, South Poso Pesisir Sub-district, Poso District, on Friday.

"I have observed the temporary classrooms and the school building damaged by last week’s quake. I instructed the principal to restart school activities as normal," Gibran said while visiting Tangkura 1 Elementary School.

He noted that learning activities could be held at four large tents provided by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) at the emergency shelter, where hundreds of residents are currently staying.

Gibran also praised the quick response from BNPB and local officials, who set up a public kitchen and delivered humanitarian aid at the site.

He further called for trauma-healing services for children and prioritized aid distribution for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The vice president also pledged government assistance for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

"Houses with minor, moderate, or severe damage will receive support. Public facilities such as schools and health centers will be repaired or rebuilt," he remarked.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the 5.8-magnitude quake struck Poso District at 5:36 a.m. local time on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the Central Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the quake affected 433 residents, including 31 elderly people, 23 young children, and five people with disabilities. Tangkura Village was the worst-hit area, with 49 houses heavily damaged and 34 others slightly damaged.
