Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Home Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening village governance and institutions, Deputy Minister Ribka Haluk said on Monday.

The commitment is being realized through strategic initiatives, including the Village Governance and Development Strengthening Program (P3PD), Haluk said at the National Conference of the Indonesian Village Government Association (Apdesi) in Jakarta.

"This program aims to increase the capacity of village institutions to improve governance and enhance the quality of village development," she stated, according to a ministry release.

Haluk explained that P3PD is implemented through several steps, including strengthening the performance of government and village officials through tailored training, enhancing participatory development with improved mentoring systems, and introducing performance-based incentive transfers to encourage better outcomes.

The program also seeks to improve coordination, supervision, monitoring, and evaluation by using technology-based village information systems.

Besides P3PD, the ministry has introduced various capacity-building activities, including training for the Family Empowerment and Welfare Movement (TP PKK) administrators and efforts to accelerate the creation of smart villages.

To support digital village transformation, Haluk highlighted four key aspects: society, infrastructure, governance, and the economy.

She acknowledged challenges such as limited telecommunications access, low human resource capacity, and restricted technology and budgetary resources.

"Through national programs, we believe every village will gain equal opportunities and access to technology," she said.

Haluk emphasized that villages are the spearhead of development and must be encouraged to become more independent through good governance and active community participation.

She added that villages should develop productive economic enterprises, such as agriculture, fisheries, and plantations, to serve as food suppliers for industry in urban areas.

"I hope villages can also strengthen community skills by increasing access to education," she said.
