Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) announced on Tuesday that it is exploring cooperation on halal certification with Peru.

BPJPH head Ahmad Haikal Hasan said he had discussed the possible collaboration with Peruvian Ambassador to Indonesia, Luis Tsuboyama.

"This collaboration is an important step in expanding the global halal ecosystem," Hasan said in his statement.

He noted that the meeting followed up on President Prabowo Subianto's talks with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, where both leaders discussed opportunities for cooperation in the halal product sector.

The talks also included plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on halal cooperation between BPJPH and relevant Peruvian institutions.

"BPJPH is committed to supporting Peru in building a credible and internationally recognized halal certification system," Hasan added.

According to him, the Peruvian government specifically requested BPJPH's guidance on establishing a halal institution in the country.

Ambassador Tsuboyama welcomed Indonesia's support, saying that Peru sees halal certification as a strategic opportunity to expand market access.

"With BPJPH's guidance, we are optimistic about building a strong halal institution in Peru," he said.

Both sides agreed to maintain communication and hold technical discussions, including through online forums, to strengthen future cooperation.

The collaboration also follows the signing of the Indonesia-Peru Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IP-CEPA) on August 12, which is expected to boost trade between the two countries.

Trade Minister Budi Santoso has set a target of US$960 million in bilateral trade once IP-CEPA takes effect, up from the US$480.7 million recorded in 2024.
