"As regulators, we should think about creating regulations that can protect our youngsters amid digitalization," she said at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in South Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday.
Hafid noted that undeniably, the rapid digitalization and AI development pose threats to several conventional jobs, even causing layoffs in a number of sectors.
Nevertheless, she said, digitalization and AI can also trigger the emergence of new jobs.
The minister underlined that Indonesia's younger generation should not be pessimistic or have a negative attitude towards AI. Instead, she continued, they should prepare themselves with new skills.
She further said that young people should not only focus on those who lost their jobs but also on how many new MSMEs emerged with the help of digitalization.
She also affirmed that the government is present to ensure the community is protected and gets the benefits of digital technology development, including AI.
The Indonesian government is currently preparing the AI Road Map, which will serve as a guideline for developing an inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem.
The government has determined five priority sectors for AI development, which are health, digital talent education, bureaucratic reform, smart city development, and food security, to ensure that digital transformation promotes fairness and people’s welfare.
