This was conveyed by Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti, who led the Indonesian delegation at the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting on the AITIGA Review, held in a hybrid format in Jakarta on Thursday (August 28).
“This meeting presented a strategic opportunity to address our shared issues with India that remain unresolved and to pursue meaningful results that are equally beneficial for all parties," she said in a statement cited here on Friday.
She highlighted that ASEAN economic ministers had agreed to fast-track the talks, with the review targeted for completion by the end of 2025, noting that as this year’s ASEAN chair, Malaysia has presented a report on the review’s progress.
The deputy minister stressed that Indonesia had also underscored the importance of enhancing the enduring trade relations between ASEAN countries and India to deliver greater benefits to the Southeast Asian region.
She expressed confidence that the optimal implementation of the AITIGA would open broad opportunities for Indonesian business players to contribute more to the regional trade ecosystem.
"Indonesia is strongly committed to making sure that the AITIGA review leads to more trade facilitation, deeper regional economic integration, and expanded business opportunities for all," Esti affirmed.
The review is considered crucial, particularly since India is ASEAN’s eighth-largest trading partner.
Bilateral data from the Indonesian Trade Ministry shows that trade between Indonesia and India was valued at US$29.18 billion in 2023, with Indonesia’s exports accounting for US$22.5 billion of the total.
Indonesia’s leading export commodities to India that year included coal, palm oil, stainless steel, and steel ores.
