The meeting was revealed by Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Islamic Students Family (PII), Nasrullah Larada, in an official statement received in Jakarta on Saturday evening.
As of the release of this report, the Presidential Palace, including Presidential Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi, has not responded to questions regarding the meeting between President Prabowo and representatives of the 16 Islamic organizations.
Among the organizations present were Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the Indonesian Da’wah Council (DDII), al-Irsyad, Persatuan Islam, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
Nasrullah described the meeting with President Prabowo as a positive step that should be supported by all elements of the nation to help maintain a conducive situation in the country.
“This meeting is a very positive and timely signal for our nation. At a time when tensions are rising, communication and dialogue among elements of the nation must be strengthened. PII believes that dialogue is the best way to resolve national problems, not through anarchism or vandalism, which only harm us all and undermine the values of justice we uphold,” Nasrullah said after the meeting.
During the discussion, President Prabowo called on the Islamic organizations to work together with the government to safeguard public stability, a call that PII fully supports.
Nasrullah said he had instructed all activists, alumni, and the younger generation within the PII network, as well as the wider community, to exercise restraint and avoid being provoked by incitement that could divide the nation.
“To all elements of the nation, let us work together to preserve stability. Let us return differences of opinion to the rule of law and the constitution. Acts of violence, arson, and destruction of public and state facilities are not solutions, but the beginning of destruction. Let us build peace through dialogue and solidarity,” he said.
The call came amid rising tensions in several cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Makassar, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta, following clashes between protesters and security forces.
The demonstrations, which initially opposed housing allowances for members of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), escalated after a police armored vehicle ran over Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi driver, killing him.
The tragic incident sparked public anger and fueled protests that continued from Thursday through Saturday afternoon.
Regarding the incident, Nasrullah said PII urged law enforcement authorities to act professionally and transparently in holding accountable those involved, all of whom are police officers.
“We express our deepest condolences for the loss of our brother. We urge law enforcement to work professionally and transparently in fully investigating this incident so that justice is truly upheld and no party feels sacrificed,” he added.
Photos from the meeting showed Muhammadiyah represented by Secretary General Prof. Abdul Mu’ti and NU represented by Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf.
Both also serve as ministers in the current cabinet, with Abdul Mu’ti as Minister of Primary and Secondary Education and Saifullah Yusuf as Minister of Social Affairs.
In addition to the dialogue with the 16 Islamic organizations, President Prabowo also held a limited meeting with several of his ministers, Armed Forces Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo in Hambalang.
