Jakarta (ANTARA) - The chairperson of the executive board of the Indonesian Athletics Association (PB PASI), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, is targeting the new athletics training center built in North Sumatra Province to operate in 2026.

"We are currently building another training center in North Sumatra, which, I think, is better than the one in Pangalengan," he said at the 2025 PASI Congress in Solo, Central Java, on Saturday.

Currently, the association has two training centers, namely in Pangalengan, West Java, and Mimika, Papua.

Pandjaitan explained that the new training center in North Sumatra is built in accordance with international standards, equipped with various facilities, such as a dormitory, a fitness center, a research center, a canteen, and others, that are integrated with one another.

He explained that the training center can be reached in around 30 minutes from Silangit Airport, thereby encouraging the creation of sports and industrial ecosystems.

He also expressed hope that the construction could be completed by the first quarter of 2026, so it can be inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto along with an agricultural nursery facility that is currently being developed near the training center.

Furthermore, Pandjaitan stated that the new training center shows that Indonesia is not inferior to other countries in terms of athletic facilities.

Nevertheless, he underlined the importance of strengthening human resources and programs for training and competition to advance Indonesia's athletics.

During Saturday's congress, PASI reappointed Pandjaitan as its executive board chairperson for the 2025-2029 period, following his previous term from 2021-2025.

As PASI will target Asian-level achievements going forward, he called for collaboration within the association, both at the central and regional levels, to achieve the goal.
