Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Deputy Commander Gen. Tandyo Budi Revita dismissed speculation that security forces were deliberately allowing violent demonstrations in order to justify the imposition of martial law.

“There is no intention to take over (through martial law), none at all,” Tandyo said on Monday at the House of Representatives (DPR) complex in Jakarta after attending a closed-door meeting with Commission I.

He explained that the responsibility for handling demonstrations lies with the National Police (Polri), while the TNI only provides assistance to help maintain order.

“We abide by the constitution. We provide support to other institutions based on regulations and official requests at the time,” Tandyo said.

The deputy commander emphasized that TNI’s commitment to working closely with Polri to restore security stability was reinforced after President Prabowo Subianto issued direct instructions to TNI Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Saturday, August 30.

In that meeting, Prabowo urged both leaders to strengthen coordination in order to contain the growing number of violent demonstrations.

“So there is no question of us taking over. As has been stated, Polri takes the lead on the ground, and only when conditions require do we step in together with them,” Tandyo explained.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called on security forces to take firm action against any threats, including those targeting the homes of public officials and state facilities.

The statement was delivered by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, conveying the President’s message during the Plenary Session of the Red and White Cabinet held at the Presidential Office on Sunday (August 31).

“If incidents occur that threaten the safety of officials -- including looting of their homes -- security personnel must not hesitate to respond decisively,” the President said.
