Hundreds of Tanah Abang residents gathered at Bunderan HI in Central Jakarta on Monday to sign a peace declaration, condemning recent acts of anarchy and calling for an end to the violence.
Head of Rumah Guyub Tenabang, Heru, said that the peace declaration aims to protect Jakarta from anarchists who have infiltrated the protesters.
"This declaration reflects Tanah Abang community's concern and this is our resistance," he said.
Heru stated that the demonstration by various community elements was necessary to remind government to return to the right path.
However, he continued, anarchic acts of vandalism in several public facilities are unacceptable and it was opposed by Tanah Abang residents.
"We will fight anyone who damages Jakarta. We also will consolidate across mass organizations and community leaders in addressing the current situation in Jakarta," he said.
Meanwhile, a Jakarta Betawi public figure, Dedi Sukur, urged the community to unite to ensure Jakarta remains conducive, safe, and free from further intruders.
"The community was invited to unite to protect their own villages, this concerns stability. Therefore, we reject all forms of violence and anarchy," Sukur said.
In the declaration, some community elements, such as neighborhood (RW), community associations (LMK), City Council, Jakmania, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) and Karang Taruna agreed to safeguard Jakarta.
