Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has directed officers to respect standard operating procedures while overseeing public protests, stressing the need to balance safety with citizens’ rights to express opinions.

In a statement received Tuesday, Listyo said law enforcement must uphold regulations, protect public freedoms, and foster unity throughout protest management.

He delivered the message during a Monday evening briefing in Jakarta with security forces from both the National Police (Polri) and Armed Forces (TNI).

General Listyo said authorities have the right to issue warnings and disperse gatherings that violate rules.

“Our focus remains protecting public expression while ensuring safety and order,” he said.

He also warned of infiltration risks: anarchic behavior targeting businesses or critical infrastructure could destabilize the economy and endanger lives, calling for strict enforcement of laws.

Officers were reminded to distinguish between orderly crowds and violent agitators.

“Regarding unlawful acts, especially vandalism, arson or damage to public or international facilities, our teams must act firmly,” he said.

Lastly, Listyo urged unity and integrity among security personnel to restore calm and public confidence.
