Mataram (ANTARA) - The East Lombok District Government has partnered with Mataram University (Unram) in West Nusa Tenggara Province to enhance seaweed farming development in the region.

“The seaweed potential in East Lombok has been designated as one of the world-class tropical seaweed development centers,” East Lombok Regent Haerul Warisin said on Wednesday.

He welcomed the collaboration in the seaweed development plan, calling it a golden opportunity for all parties to advance the region.

“I have instructed the relevant local government offices to facilitate all necessary permits,” he added.

This initiative, he continued, aims to realize the vision of making East Lombok District a world-class center for tropical seaweed development.

“Once it is underway, the local government will empower the East Lombok region-owned enterprises to develop businesses in the seaweed sector,” he said.

To demonstrate commitment, the Regent proposed repurposing land previously designated for a rest area in the Ekas area for the construction of a seaweed development laboratory.

“The presence of this laboratory is expected to provide solutions and drive the advancement of the seaweed industry in East Lombok,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mataram University Rector Prof. Bambang Hari stated that East Lombok, as a national center for seaweed development, has very strategic potential.

“As an initial step, a laboratory is planned to be built in the coastal area,” he said.

According to Hari, Unram requested a plot of land measuring between 20 to 30 are for the laboratory in East Lombok’s coastal region.

“This site will serve as a national center for the development of superior seaweed seeds, addressing the main challenge in East Lombok, which is the development of high-quality seed stock,” he added.
