Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) assessed that economic growth after demonstrations in various Indonesian regions must be accompanied by the government's concrete steps to carry out deregulation, especially in the labor sector.

Kadin Chairperson Anindya Bakrie, after attending a discussion event with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday, noted that the security situation is currently under control, thereby making business players more confident.

However, he continued, the next step that needs to be taken is ensuring policies that support economic growth can be realized immediately.

"Kadin believes that the programs initiated by the President have good intentions, and the implementation has started; however, we must also support each other and collaborate," Bakrie remarked.

According to him, economic recovery must not only be achieved by depending on big investment, but also by ensuring it is inclusive, involving players of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives, among others.

Currently, Kadin has coordinated with 38 provinces and encouraged regional heads to continue focusing on boosting the regional economy without increasing the burden on regional revenue after last week's protests.

He assessed that economic stability after the protests, economic stability is still relatively solid, among others, indicated by the rupiah exchange rate and the capital market that are still maintained, which are deemed a positive signal for investors in the long term.

"Indeed, geopolitics is dynamic. However, for Indonesia, I think we should focus on domestic consumption and domestic economy," he said.

Protests have earlier escalated across multiple Indonesian regions, especially Jakarta, following the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a police vehicle during a protest near the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday (August 28).

Several public facilities, including bus stations, were damaged, while the homes of several officials were looted.

Some public figures and activists have formulated the 17+8 Demands from the People, comprising 17 demands that must be fulfilled in one week and 8 demands that must be fulfilled in one year.

The demands include ensuring decent wages for all workers, including online motorcycle taxi drivers, and taking emergency measures to prevent mass layoffs.
