Jakarta (ANTARA) - Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has called on the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) to utilize its new warship, KRI Brawijaya 320, to protect Indonesia’s rich maritime natural resources.

"We are facing challenges in regulating and securing the natural resources owned by our country," he said while addressing the crew of KRI Brawijaya 320, docked at Pier 107 in Tanjung Priok Port here on Monday.

He emphasized that Indonesia’s vast marine resources must be optimally utilized for the benefit of the people. With proper management, he believes the fisheries and marine industries can generate benefits and maximally contribute to the country’s economic growth.

To ensure this, the minister expressed hope that the Navy, through KRI Brawijaya 320, will bolster maritime security and defense, preventing foreign parties from exploiting Indonesia’s waters.

“The people of Indonesia expect the Indonesian Military to safeguard the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote Island,” he asserted.

Earlier in the day, Sjamsoeddin, accompanied by senior officials from the military and police, officially welcomed the arrival of KRI Brawijaya 320 from Italy.

Built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, the frigate completed a 44-day voyage to Indonesia. The vessel measures 143 meters in length, reaches a top speed of 32 knots, and accommodates up to 171 crew members.

KRI Brawijaya 320 is an anti-air warfare (AAW) frigate with designs for flexibility, modularity, and scalability, allowing it to be configured for modern naval operations.

It is also equipped with modern navigation systems and an integrated combat system, including CMS or combat management system, sensors, weapons, communications, and high-speed networked navigation systems.
