Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment stated that the 29 percent budget increase for 2026 will be focused on improving waste management and mitigating climate change.

"The 2026 budget distribution has been structured to support management, improve environmental quality, and disaster and climate change resilience," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said in Jakarta on Monday.

He stated that the public would directly benefit from better environmental quality, more effective pollution control, and improved waste management facilities in the regions.

The ministry's 2026 budget increased by 29 percent from Rp1 trillion (US$60 million) to Rp1.3 trillion (US$76 million), signaling that environmental protection is now a top priority for national development, Nurofiq mentioned.

According to him, this budget increase is expected to drive priority programs, particularly community-based waste management and strengthening carbon financing instruments.

In addition, Rp70 billion (US$4.1 million) of the total budget will be allocated for community-based waste management programs.

The funds will be utilized to curb open dumping, strengthen Reuse-Reduce-Recycle Waste Processing Facilities (TPS3R), encourage the growth of waste banks, and implement waste-to-energy technology in traditional markets, the minister outlined.

The government is also preparing supporting facilities, such as composters and containers, to strengthen public education at the source level, he added.

On September 4, Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) approved the 2026 budget ceiling for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/Environmental Agency (KLH/BPLH) at Rp 1.3 trillion.

Of the total budget of Rp1.3 trillion, Rp861 billion (US$50 million) will be divided into management support programs, including operational expenses for personnel and goods, and non-operational expenses; Rp476 billion (US$28 million) for environmental quality programs; and Rp58 billion (US$3.4 million) for disaster resilience and climate change programs.

This includes a community-based waste management program, amounting to Rp70 billion.
