Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said Tuesday that Indonesia operates 25 SEZs — seven on Java and 18 outside the island.
Gresik SEZ has accumulated Rp100.85 trillion in investment as of the first half of 2025, with 32 industries providing jobs for about 41,000 people.
"PT Freeport Indonesia recently launched the world’s largest single-line copper smelter in Gresik SEZ. It has already begun producing copper for both export and domestic industries," Moegiarso said.
From January to June 2025, Gresik SEZ realized Rp11.2 trillion in investment, achieving 45.9 percent of its annual target of Rp24.4 trillion. Cumulative exports from the zone reached Rp8.44 trillion.
Moegiarso added that downstream copper and precious metal development in the SEZ could generate export potential of up to US$4 billion while reducing imports by around US$2.3 billion.
Meanwhile, Kendal SEZ has recorded Rp90.12 trillion in accumulated investment by mid-2025, with 128 industries employing more than 66,000 workers.
Its investment realization stood at Rp5.12 trillion, or 61.2 percent of the annual target of Rp8.36 trillion, while exports reached Rp5.29 trillion.
Kendal SEZ has also emerged as a hub for anode and cathode production for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
"They produce lithium battery anodes for export to the United States, used by Tesla and other EV manufacturers," Moegiarso said.
