Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s government is finalizing a revision of its regulation on waste-to-energy (WTE) processing, aiming to align carbon trading instruments with global standards ahead of the UN climate summit in Brazil.

“We are currently finalizing it,” said Nani Hendiarti, deputy for Food Accessibility and Safety at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, after speaking at the Katadata Sustainability Action for the Future Economy event on Wednesday.

The regulation, Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 35 of 2018 on the acceleration of environmentally friendly WTE facilities, is being updated in the run-up to the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).

Hendiarti said the drafting involves coordination among ministries, including the Environment Ministry, to ensure that carbon trading tools meet international benchmarks and support national emission reduction goals.

“We recently held an inter-ministerial meeting with the Environment Ministry,” she said.

She noted that the revision has been in progress for more than a year, addressing issues such as international carbon trading and voluntary market mechanisms.

“We want to include various elements, not only compliance-based mechanisms but also voluntary ones,” Hendiarti said.

Jakarta aims to complete the new regulation before COP30 to showcase its climate commitments on the global stage.

Beyond industrial emissions, the carbon economy framework is expected to draw contributions from other sectors, including marine resources.

The ministry believes the updated regulation will strengthen Indonesia’s role in international carbon markets while opening new economic opportunities in environmental and ocean-based industries.

“We want to leverage other sectors, including ocean areas, not only focus on pollution,” Hendiarti said.
