“The emergency alert status for the malaria outbreak has been extended, effective from September 2025 to February 2026, due to the persistently high number of cases,” said Acting Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Parigi Moutong, Moh Rivai, on Saturday.
According to data from the local Health Office, the number of malaria cases remains at 160 and has shown no signs of decline, prompting the local government to implement concrete measures to address the situation.
Previously, the emergency alert status was enacted for 30 days, from August 14 to September 12, through a decree issued by the District Head of Parigi Moutong.
“The BPBD, along with several relevant institutions within the malaria response task force, has undertaken various efforts, including disseminating information on prevention and treatment in affected areas,” Rivai added.
The sub-districts with the highest prevalence of malaria include Moutong, Bolano Lambunu, Taopa, Kasimbar, and Sausu.
To curb further transmission, the government is conducting health screenings for residents in these sub-districts.
“Case tracing by the Health Office is a strategic measure that must be pursued to prevent the spread of malaria to other areas,” Rivai emphasized.
Parigi Moutong had previously received malaria elimination status from the Ministry of Health in 2024, recognizing its success in controlling the disease. However, the sharp rise in cases this year has drawn serious concern.
“The Health Office reported that the initial case originated from a mining area in Moutong. We urge residents not to hesitate in seeking medical attention at community health centers or other health facilities if they experience malaria symptoms,” Rivai said.
