Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Trade Ministry on Wednesday announced the first export shipment of 9,000 eco-friendly natural fiber crafts from Kebumen, Central Java, to the United States, valued at USD57,200 (Rp937 million).

The shipment, consisting of handwoven baskets made from banana stems and water hyacinth, was produced by a local micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME), said Fajarini Puntodewi, the ministry’s Director General of National Export Development.

"This shows Indonesian MSMEs can deliver high-quality, sustainable, and globally competitive products," Puntodewi said in a statement.

"These crafts combine durability with aesthetic appeal and are gaining traction in international markets," she added.

The deal followed the company’s participation in the 2024 Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI), which helped secure commercial contracts.

“The government is committed to empowering MSMEs as vital players in global supply chains,” she added.

Demand for Indonesian crafts continues to rise. From January to June 2025, national exports of craft products reached USD253.72 million, up 7.39 percent from the same period in 2024.

Global interest in home decor made from natural fibers is also growing. In 2024, the global trade value of these products surpassed USD6 billion, with average annual growth nearing three percent.

Key markets such as the United States and the European Union are seeing even higher growth, driven by increasing consumer awareness of sustainable products.

From January to August 2025, the ministry facilitated 462 business-matching events with 33 partner countries, including 312 product pitching sessions and 150 formal meetings.

These initiatives led to USD90.9 million in trade transactions—USD55.95 million in confirmed purchase orders and USD32.95 million in potential future deals.
