Jakarta (ANTARA) - Papua governor-elect Matius Fakhiri on Wednesday urged all Papuans to move past political divisions and reunite, following the Constitutional Court's rejection of a legal challenge against the 2024 gubernatorial re-vote results.

The Court dismissed the case filed by candidate pair Benhur Tomi Mano and Constant Karma, who contested the results of the August 6 re-vote.

In its ruling, the Court said the petitioners' claims were unproven and lacked legal merit.

"It is time to put aside our differences, restore brotherhood, and build Papua together," Fakhiri said in a statement.

"We call on all sides, supporters and opponents, to maintain peace and work toward a peaceful, prosperous, and unified Papua," he added.

Fakhiri and deputy governor-elect Aryoko Alberto Ferdinand Rumaropen held a press conference after the Court's decision, calling the verdict the final step in the legal process.

“This is not just our victory, but a win for the people of Papua,” Fakhiri said.

The pair also expressed gratitude to the public and all parties involved in ensuring a peaceful democratic process.

“Papua is for everyone, our shared home,” they said.

The re-vote was ordered by the Court after it disqualified Yermias Bisai, the original running mate of Benhur Tomi Mano, for submitting false information about his residential address in a document affirming he had never been convicted or stripped of voting rights.

The Court instructed the General Elections Commission (KPU) to hold a rerun, allowing candidate pair Fakhiri-Rumaropen to compete against a new ticket nominated by the same coalition, excluding Bisai. Constant Karma replaced Bisai as Benhur's new running mate.

In the rerun, Fakhiri-Rumaropen narrowly defeated Mano-Karma, securing 50.4 percent of the vote to 49.6 percent. The Constitutional Court’s ruling confirms their victory.
