Medan (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health has called on referral hospitals across Indonesia to strengthen access to stroke treatment services.

Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono said stroke is the third leading cause of death worldwide each year.

He emphasized that referral hospitals should not only improve their services but also function as centers for learning, mentoring, and referral in their respective regions.

“Proctoring Bypass Cerebral Surgery is part of a program that underlines the role of hospitals not only as service providers,” Dante said after virtually opening the Proctoring Bypass Cerebral Surgery program at Adam Malik Hospital from Jakarta on Saturday.

He stressed that through bypass cerebral surgery, Indonesia can deliver medical services that meet international standards.

Dante also praised the National Brain Center Hospital (RS PON) Prof. Dr. dr. Mahar Mardjono for performing the first bypass cerebral surgery in North Sumatra.

According to Dante, North Sumatra is the eighth province to benefit from the bypass cerebral surgery program.

“In the future, we do not want this limited to only eight provinces. All provinces in Indonesia must be able to provide advanced brain surgery services independently,” he said.

Acting President Director of Adam Malik Hospital, Dr. Zainal Safri, explained that the bypass cerebral surgery was performed to treat moyamoya disease, a rare blood vessel disorder in the brain.

“This hospital has never handled a moyamoya case before. That is why we worked together with the medical team from RS PON,” Zainal said.
