“There are 38 people (still unaccounted for),” said Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari here on Tuesday.
He noted that a total of 102 people have been evacuated from the site. Of these, 91 managed to escape on their own, while 11 were rescued by joint search and rescue (SAR) personnel.
“One of the 11 rescued victims was found dead,” Muhari confirmed.
Meanwhile, 77 injured victims have been transported to nearby hospitals. Thirty-four of them were sent to the Sidoarjo General Regional Hospital (RSUD), 38 to Siti Hajar Hospital, and four to Delta Surya Hospital.
“The deceased victim has also been identified,” he added.
BNPB categorized the incident as a technological failure disaster and stressed the importance of enforcing strict building safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
“Multi-story buildings, especially those used for educational purposes and housing many people, must undergo strict construction supervision,” Muhari emphasized.
The collapse occurred on Monday (September 29) at around 3 p.m. local time, while students were performing Ashar prayers in congregation.
Preliminary findings indicate that the building’s foundation was unable to support the weight of ongoing construction work on the fourth floor, which had been underway since morning, causing the structure to collapse down to the ground level.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs has distributed logistical aid to the victims, including 1,200 ready-to-eat meal packages, 500 children's food packages, 170 blankets, 150 folding mattresses, 150 family kits, and multipurpose tents.
