According to Dave Laksono, deputy chair of DPR’s Commission I on communication affairs, TikTok features such as TikTok Shop and live commerce have provided a lifeline for many small entrepreneurs in Indonesia.
“Law enforcement must not cull the productive digital ecosystem; it must instead aim to improve governance and ensure compliance with regulations,” Laksono said here on Friday.
Nevertheless, the legislator expressed support for the government’s firm measures in enforcing regulations and maintaining a safe digital space, as mandated by national laws.
He noted that the permit freeze was also appropriate amid allegations that TikTok’s live streaming monetization system had been exploited for online gambling.
Laksono further urged TikTok to act cooperatively and transparently in fulfilling its obligations as a Private Electronic System Operator (PSE), including providing data requested by authorities.
“Non-compliance with data requests, especially in the context of alleged law violations, shows disregard for Indonesia’s digital sovereignty,” he remarked.
He also reminded that all digital platforms, both domestic and foreign, must observe national laws and remain responsible for content and activities on their platforms.
“We will monitor the process and push for stronger, fairer, and public-oriented digital regulations in Indonesia,” he added.
Earlier, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced the suspension of TikTok’s Electronic System Operator License (TDPSE) due to its failure to comply with regulatory requirements.
“This step reflects the government’s stern response to TikTok’s decision to provide incomplete data on TikTok Live activities during the unrest period between August 25 and 30, 2025,” said Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Monitoring at the ministry.
Sabar explained that the suspension followed TikTok’s refusal to disclose data regarding traffic information and the monetization of live streaming activities, amid suspicions that the platform was being used to spread online gambling content.
