“We don’t want to drag this out. If a decision is reached during the coordination meeting, the tender for this waste-to-energy project can begin immediately,” Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat said in Bandung District on Sunday.
He explained that his ministry is currently accelerating the development of the Oxbow Cicukang WtE plant in Margaasih Sub-district, Bandung District, to address the increasingly urgent waste crisis.
Hidayat noted that the Ministry of Environment, together with a technical team, has inspected the proposed site and assessed it as more suitable than previous plans because it is located far from residential areas and close to a water source.
According to him, the process from tender to contract awarding is expected to take around one year, while the facility is targeted to begin operations within the next 1.5 to 2 years.
During the construction phase, the Ministry of Environment and local government will also implement interim measures using incinerators and Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) technology.
During the visit, West Java Regional Secretary Herman Suryatman expressed support for the WtE plant development, saying waste management in Greater Bandung is a top priority.
He expressed hope that the program would become a key solution to long-standing waste problems in the metropolitan area.
Meanwhile, Bandung Regency Head Dadang Supriatna said the region is still facing a waste emergency due to limited landfill capacity.
He noted that Bandung Regency currently generates around 1,800 tons of waste per day, while the disposal quota is capped at only 280 tons per day.
