Speaking after the meeting on Friday, Basuki said the visit aimed to provide updates on efforts to establish Nusantara as Indonesia’s political capital, in line with Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 79 of 2025, which revises the 2025 Government Work Plan.
"I took this opportunity to report on the status and progress of Nusantara’s development following the issuance of Perpres 79/2025, while also presenting plans for 2026–2028, when we will focus on completing construction of legislative and judicial areas as mandated by the President," he said.
The OIKN chief expressed confidence that Nusantara would soon emerge as a modern and inclusive political capital.
"Through close coordination with the Ministry of State Secretariat, we are optimistic about preparing Nusantara to become a modern and inclusive political capital capable of running governance effectively by 2028," he remarked.
Construction of Nusantara began in 2022 under the initiative of then president Joko Widodo in parts of East Kalimantan Province, with President Prabowo Subianto continuing the project.
Prabowo’s commitment to the future capital is reflected in Perpres 79/2025, which sets a target for Nusantara to be officially designated as the political capital in 2028.
This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting with the OIKN head and cabinet members on January 21, when the president approved Rp48.8 trillion (around US$3 billion) in funding to support the capital’s development through 2029.
To meet the target, the Prabowo administration has decided to accelerate construction of buildings for executive, legislative, and judicial institutions in the future capital.
