"Our goal is to lead mosques to serve not only as centers for religious activities but also as institutions that bring tangible benefits to society," the ministry's Director of Islamic Affairs Arsad Hidayat stated in Jakarta on Friday.
He emphasized the importance of involving stakeholders from various sectors in mosque management to broaden the positive impact of these houses of worship.
To that end, Hidayat noted, the ministry has devised a range of initiatives, including capacity-building programs for mosque operators, provision of disabled-friendly facilities, empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises operating near mosques, and the promotion of religious literacy among youth.
He further underlined the need for accurate mosque data and comprehensive strengthening of mosque-related programs.
Meanwhile, head of the ministry’s Mosque Affairs Sub-directorate Nurul Badruttamam stressed that mosque operators should be equipped with sound managerial skills to maximize the potential of mosques in fostering economic and social empowerment.

He also highlighted government efforts to improve mosque management, encourage the regeneration of mosque youth organizations, pursue digitization, and direct mosques to play a stronger role in improving community welfare.
Badruttamam added that his office is preparing a blueprint for mosque development, updating mosque data, introducing a hymn and logo for mosques, producing documentaries on mosque history, and increasing the accuracy of assistance distribution.
"We intend these strategies as part of efforts to empower mosques and help them grow more inclusive and professional," he remarked.
Hamzah Sahal, Head of the Literacy and Publication Division of Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama, underlined the need to improve religious and cultural literacy through mosques.
"We advocate for the republication of books on mosque history, production of documentaries, review of the legal status of waqf land used by mosques, creation of wells for mosques, and stronger literacy efforts through digital means," he said.
