KLH Secretary Rosa Vivien Ratnawati said in Jakarta on Tuesday that Indonesia successfully reduced 20.25 million tons of CO2e between 2014 and 2016.
In recognition of its performance in tackling climate change, Indonesia received international incentives amounting to US$103.8 million from the Green Climate Fund.
Ratnawati noted that the REDD+ initiative was able to run smoothly and meet its targets through effective coordination and collaboration among stakeholders.
“Under the Paris Agreement, Indonesia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89 percent through its own efforts and up to 43.20 percent with international support by 2030,” she said.
“This commitment must be implemented transparently and accountably, as climate targets are a shared responsibility across all sectors,” she added.
She also emphasized that the climate funds are managed transparently and accountably by the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The funds have been allocated to strengthen the 2021–2030 National REDD+ Strategy, develop the National Registry System (SRN PPI) and SIGN SMART platform, while also improving governance capacity from the central to regional levels.
Ratnawati said the achievement demonstrates Indonesia’s capability not only in protecting the environment but also in transforming climate action into tangible benefits for communities and valuable legacies for future generations.
She highlighted that the success of the REDD+ RBP Project serves as a strong foundation for achieving more ambitious goals, including the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and the Net Zero Emissions vision by 2060 or earlier.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki underscored the strategic importance of the REDD+ program, noting that it contributes not only to emission reductions but also to empowering local and indigenous communities.
“We appreciate all parties who have worked hard to achieve this milestone,” Marzuki said.
