Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated on Tuesday that the government has begun developing a results-based payment (RBP) funding proposal for efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) under the GCF.
"This funding initiative will support the Ministry of Forestry in various aspects," he remarked at the Kick-Off Meeting Concept Note and New Funding Proposal for GCF REDD+ RBP Phase II in Jakarta.
According to him, the domestic forestry sector remains committed to reducing emissions caused by forest fires and land degradation, starting with improvements in forest governance and sustainable forest use, including through social forestry, the involvement of indigenous communities, and various conservation measures.
His ministry also continues to rehabilitate forest areas damaged by fires or other causes of land degradation.
Based on emissions reduction performance from 2014 to 2016, the GCF disbursed US$103.78 million for reducing 20.25 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

On the same occasion, Antoni's Expert Staff for Climate Change, Haruni Krisnawati, explained that for the second phase, the government is targeting funding of around US$80–90 million for the REDD+ RBP scheme.
"The figure is smaller than the previous one, but this is our opportunity to prepare a strong concept and proposal," she said.
Regarding the period and amount of emissions to be submitted for new payments from the GCF, her office will further study the requirements for this new phase of funding.
Previously, the Indonesian government disbursed the first phase of funding received from the GCF for climate action in 38 provinces on August 7.
The US$103.78 million received is being distributed in three waves to finance climate action programs in the regions.
