Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has expressed confidence that Indonesia-Malaysia economic relations will continue to strengthen in the years ahead, driven by robust growth in bilateral trade and investment.

Delivering his remarks at a Malaysia Day event on Tuesday evening, Sadewa revealed that trade between the two countries reached US$23 billion in 2024.

“Malaysia has also become one of Indonesia’s leading global investment partners,” he said, noting that Malaysian investments in Indonesia totaled US$4.2 billion last year.

Tourism also saw encouraging progress, with 1.7 million visits recorded in 2024. Sadewa said this achievement opens new opportunities for expanding cooperation in trade and financial sectors.

He emphasized both countries’ commitment to advancing Islamic finance under a shared vision of becoming a global hub for the sector.

Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen collaboration between Indonesian Eximbank and its Malaysian counterpart to further boost bilateral trade.

“We are also supporting the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF), which is expanding its capacity to finance green infrastructure projects across the region,” Sadewa added.

He highlighted the rollout of cross-border QR payment systems as a milestone in financial integration between the two nations.

Beyond economic ties, Sadewa noted that the Indonesia-Malaysia partnership extends to health, education, and deeper people-to-people exchanges—describing these as “essential in building lasting friendships between our nations.”

“At regional and global levels, Indonesia and Malaysia continue to share common positions and work closely within platforms such as the United Nations and ASEAN,” he said.

Sadewa also underscored the personal rapport between President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship and shared commitment to deepening cooperation.

“This year alone, our president and Malaysia’s prime minister have met no fewer than six times, both in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur,” he remarked.
