Jakarta (ANTARA) - The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has expressed support for Indonesia’s decision to withhold visas for Israeli athletes who were initially slated to compete at the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta this month.

Chairwoman of the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (FGI), Ita Yuliati, conveyed the information during a press conference at Indonesia Arena in Jakarta on Friday.

"This morning, the FIG contacted me by phone and officially stated its support for the Indonesian government’s decision," she told reporters, noting that her federation had previously warned the FIG of potential controversy stemming from Indonesia’s foreign policy toward Israel.

Yuliati said that both the national and international gymnastics bodies had maintained intensive coordination to ensure the 53rd world championship, set for October 19–25 in Jakarta, runs smoothly without compromising Indonesia’s political stance.

"It should be noted that this is an official FIG event, with our gymnastics federation serving as the local organizing committee," she added, emphasizing close collaboration between the two federations.

The FGI chair also expressed hope that Jakarta Gymnastics 2025 would meet expectations and leave a lasting legacy for the development of Indonesian gymnastics.

"We ask for everyone’s support so this event can foster sportsmanship and bring pride to Indonesia. This is a historic opportunity for our nation," she said.

Echoing her sentiment, Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari affirmed that his organization fully respects the government’s firm stance on barring Israeli gymnasts from the upcoming competition.

"We believe this decision was made carefully to serve a greater interest—ensuring that the world championship proceeds safely, orderly, and successfully," he stated.

On Thursday (October 9), Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra reaffirmed that the government would not issue visas to six Israeli athletes reportedly set to participate in the Jakarta event.

He described the decision as proof of Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestine’s struggle for independence and as a prudent response to domestic pressures.

Mahendra also cited President Prabowo Subianto’s recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly, reiterating that Indonesia would not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until the Palestinian people achieve true freedom and sovereignty.

This statement followed Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung’s remarks stressing that Israeli athletes would not be permitted to visit the capital, while urging the central government to handle the matter carefully.
