Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir supports the decision taken by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) to ban the Israeli contingent from participating in the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta.

“We appreciate the decision taken to ensure the World Gymnastics Championships can proceed safely and orderly,” he remarked on Friday.

Thohir conveyed this after the NOC and FGI issued a press statement confirming that the Israeli contingent would not participate in the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships on October 19-25.

He emphasized that the Indonesian government, specifically his ministry, has taken a firm stance against the presence and participation of Israeli athletes in this event.

According to him, this stance aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's directives, conveyed on various occasions, including during his speech at the United Nations (UN) session, strongly condemning Israel's cruelty against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

“The government firmly states that it will refrain from any contact with Israel until Israel recognizes the existence of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state,” Thohir said.

He also stated that Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and therefore, as part of the government, he remains steadfast in upholding that principle.

The Indonesian government is demonstrating its commitment to promoting Indonesia's achievements in sports by providing full support for the organization of the World Gymnastics Championships, Thohir continued.

He acknowledged that the championship does not only bring together the best gymnasts, but also marks Indonesia's participation as the first Southeast Asian country to host these championships.

He then emphasized the government’s commitment to developing Indonesian sports and its efforts to make Indonesia a global sports hub.

“However, there are principles that must be maintained in accordance with the constitution and state policy,” the minister remarked.

On Thursday (October 9), Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra reaffirmed that the government would not issue visas to six Israeli athletes reportedly set to participate in the event.

He described the decision as proof of Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestine’s struggle for independence and as a prudent response to domestic pressures.
