Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan is targeting the waste-to-energy (WtE) plant project in 33 Indonesian cities to be completed by the end of 2027.

At the ESG Now Awards 2025 in Jakarta on Thursday, Hasan affirmed that he had received a green light from President Prabowo Subianto to speed up waste management in urban areas by utilizing eco-friendly technology.

President Prabowo has recently issued Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025 on the management of urban waste through waste-to-energy processing. It states that the waste processed into energy is not limited to electricity, but also renewable fuel and other products.

The minister noted that prior to the issuance of the regulation, his ministry had already started the incinerator installation project in several cities.

According to him, each WtE facility will be able to process around 2,000 tons of waste per day.

Hasan further emphasized that the WtE project was initiated as part of the President's priority programs in tackling the national waste issue.

Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) showed that Indonesia generated 34.7 million tons of waste in 2024, based on reports from 328 districts and cities. Of the total, the volume of unmanaged waste reached 23.4 million tons.

National investment management authority Danantara Indonesia earlier stated that the WtE project will be launched in late 2025.

Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Danantara Indonesia, Pandu Sjahrir, stated that in the initial step, the WtE plant will be established in 10 cities.

He noted that the project attracts high interest from investors, with more than 120 national and multinational companies registered to participate.

In this regard, Danantara Indonesia is currently in the process of selecting consortia with the best capacity and capability.
