Jakarta (ANTARA) - Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti emphasized that the compulsory English subject in elementary schools will focus on building students' confidence in using the language for communication.

"It is not about learning English as a science, but as a means of communication. Therefore, at the elementary level, there is no need to emphasize grammar too much," he said during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

He reminded teachers not to focus excessively on students' grammar mistakes when they speak English. This approach aligns with the learning objectives at the elementary school level, particularly for grades 1 to 3, which still prioritize reading, writing, and numeracy skills.

"It is fine to make mistakes. What matters is that students feel confident in using the language," he added.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is preparing to implement English as a compulsory subject in elementary schools starting from the 2027–2028 academic year, following the issuance of Ministerial Regulation No. 13 of 2025.

To support the initiative, the ministry will conduct English training programs to improve the skills of teachers who have not yet met the minimum English proficiency standards.

Mu'ti expressed hope that making English a compulsory subject would mark an important step toward improving the quality of primary education in Indonesia.

Earlier, he stated that the training program for elementary school teachers is designed to help them reach the A2 English proficiency level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

He added that the program applies the principles of mindful, joyful, and meaningful learning, integrated into digital learning management systems to support sustainable education development.
