Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria has urged public relations professionals to adopt a cautious and ethical approach when using artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing that human judgment remains vital despite AI’s growing influence.

In a press statement released in Jakarta on Thursday, Patria said AI offers immense potential to improve public communication, but warned that its use must be balanced with ethical responsibility and human oversight.

“The success of future public relations practitioners will depend on our ability to master AI as a strategic tool and our commitment to uphold ethics,” he said.

Patria noted that AI systems can now assist with a wide range of communication tasks — from drafting press releases and analyzing public data to tracking online sentiment.

Many agencies and media outlets, he added, have already integrated AI into their workflow to plan and execute communication strategies more efficiently.

However, he stressed that human input remains irreplaceable for ensuring empathy, accuracy, and contextual sensitivity in communication.

“AI-generated content often lacks the emotional depth that only humans can provide,” Patria said.

“We must continue to rely on our own skills when delivering information,” he added.

He cautioned against the risks of misinformation, awkward phrasing, and false narratives that may emerge if AI systems operate without supervision.

“AI can amplify errors if not carefully monitored,” he warned, urging practitioners to remain vigilant in ensuring quality and truthfulness.

Patria reiterated that technology must serve, not replace, human communication.

“The future of communication is not just about technology, but about how humans can control it,” he said.

Indonesia has begun developing a framework to guide responsible AI use, including the AI National Road Map, which aims to foster ethical innovation, synchronize regulations with global standards, and position the country to harness AI for national progress.
