Jakarta (ANTARA) - President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has called on ASEAN to consider deploying an observer team to ensure transparency and accountability in Myanmar’s upcoming general elections.

Speaking at the retreat session of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday, President Prabowo addressed recent developments across the region, including Myanmar’s plan to hold elections in December 2025.

“The crises surrounding us continue to test our resolve—within our region and among our friends. The situation in Myanmar remains a deep concern. We are closely monitoring the latest developments, including the planned elections this December,” Prabowo said in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday.

He emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and transparency throughout Myanmar’s political process.

To support this, Prabowo proposed that ASEAN consider sending an observer mission to help safeguard the integrity of the elections.

“The ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy should continue engaging all relevant stakeholders. At the appropriate time, ASEAN may consider deploying observers to help ensure transparency and accountability in the democratic process,” he stated.

President Prabowo also highlighted the limited progress in implementing the Five-Point Consensus, which was agreed nearly five years ago.

As Myanmar prepares for elections, he stressed that the consensus must remain the guiding framework for peace and stability efforts.

“We must continue to call for a ceasefire to create space for meaningful dialogue. Indonesia stands ready to support the ASEAN Chair in engaging all parties toward a truly inclusive process,” he said.

Beyond Myanmar, Prabowo expressed concern over rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. He warned that unresolved differences could threaten peace in the region.

“I commend Prime Minister Anwar’s leadership in facilitating dialogue and ceasefire efforts. We urge both sides to resolve their differences in the spirit of ASEAN—as one family,” Prabowo concluded.
