"I have requested the procurement of an air ambulance module for the A400M, also for equipment to deal with forest fires," Prabowo said after inspecting the A400M A-4001 at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Monday.
He expressed confidence that the aircraft would strengthen Indonesia’s air defenses, particularly in humanitarian operations and disaster mitigation.
"This is a new addition to our (military) strength. The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) plays a crucial role in handling challenges and public issues. This will increase our strength," he emphasized.
The A400M aircraft measures 45.1 meters in length, 42.2 meters in width, and 14.7 meters in height. It can carry up to 37 tons of cargo or 116 personnel.
Powered by four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines, the aircraft can fly at a maximum speed of 780 kilometers per hour and has a range of up to 8,900 kilometers.
The aircraft will be used for military logistics and non-combat operations, including humanitarian and disaster response missions.
To prepare for its operation, 22 personnel — including pilots and technicians — have undergone training in Spain with Airbus.
The Defense Ministry signed a contract for two Airbus A400Ms in multirole tanker and transport configurations at the 2021 Dubai Airshow. The agreement took effect in 2022 and includes maintenance and training support.
A letter of intent was also signed for the potential purchase of four additional aircraft to strengthen the TNI Air Force’s transport capabilities.
