“This expansion can be achieved through curriculum reforms to align with the needs of green jobs,” said RR Sri Gadis Pari Bekti, the Industrial Expert Advisor at the Green Industry Center of the Ministry of Industry, during a public discussion in Jakarta on Monday.
Sri further explained that Kemenperin prioritizes upskilling and reskilling programs for workers affected by the energy transition, especially those from the coal sector, to equip them with other necessary skills.
“Moreover, we also encourage collaboration between industries and vocational institutions to create recognized internship and certification programs,” she added.
She emphasized that this effort should be a priority, considering the existing skill gap in Indonesia’s workforce, particularly among those from conventional sectors who lack relevant skills and competencies for green jobs.
Another initiative that Kemenperin is preparing to support the green industry is the development of a green jobs roadmap that will support decarbonization and the energy transition, promote the circular economy including waste management and recycled raw materials, as well as support investments and green technologies.
Sri said these initiatives are crucial for seizing opportunities in the green jobs sector amid the global movement toward a just energy transition.
“Indonesia’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in the energy sector by 2060 and in the industrial sector by 2050, along with the shift to renewable energy, presents significant opportunities for green jobs,” she stated.
She also noted that the growing environmental awareness among young people, combined with increasing global and domestic investments in sustainable industries, further expands Indonesia’s potential in this area.
“Investment trends, both globally and nationally, are now increasingly focused on eco-friendly projects. The active participation of the government, private sector, academia, and civil society will help build an ecosystem that supports green jobs,” Sri said.
