Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar announced new programs to train and provide land for families categorized as extremely poor, aiming to eradicate extreme poverty in Indonesia by 2026.

“The president approved that heads of extremely poor families will receive up to four months of training as security guards, agricultural workers, or in cleaning services. After training, they will be directly employed by job providers,” Iskandar said on Wednesday.

In addition to job training, the government plans to allocate land from agrarian reform programs to extremely poor families, primarily in the agricultural sector.

The initiative aims to empower families to manage the land productively and achieve self-sufficiency.

“Millions of hectares of state-repossessed land will be prioritized for extremely poor families in agriculture. About 49 percent of the extreme poor work in this sector,” Iskandar added.

The measures were discussed during a limited meeting on community empowerment and poverty alleviation strategies led by President Prabowo Subianto and his ministers on Tuesday.

“We will promote ownership of production assets among farmers by distributing land to decile 1 communities, with technical details to be finalized soon,” Iskandar said after the meeting.

He described the programs as evidence of a paradigm shift in poverty reduction under President Prabowo’s administration and emphasized the president’s commitment to community empowerment initiatives.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reports that 2.38 million people currently live in extreme poverty. The government aims to reduce this number to zero by 2026.

Iskandar noted that the programs will use the National Socioeconomic Single Data (DTSEN) to ensure that assistance reaches the targeted beneficiaries.
