Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is promoting villages in the country to become food and energy resilient as part of efforts to build economic self-reliance and ecological sustainability at the local level.

"The government encourages villages to become food and energy resilient villages, meaning that they are able to meet their own basic needs," Deputy Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Ahmad Riza Patria said in a statement cited on Thursday.

This was conveyed by the deputy minister in a dissemination of information event in Tegal, Central Java, on Wednesday.

According to him, the government continues to strengthen various strategic programs in villages so that communities can meet their own basic needs independently and sustainably.

He further said that food resilient villages can be achieved through agricultural diversification, such as planting rice, secondary crops, horticulture, and livestock farming.

Meanwhile, energy self-sufficiency, he continued, can be achieved by utilizing renewable energy sources based on local potential.

“The use of organic fertilizers, compost, and environmentally friendly technologies must continue to be promoted. The use of renewable energy, such as biogas, micro-hydro power plants, and solar panels, should also be encouraged for households and small enterprises needs,” he stated.

Patria emphasized that the resilient village concept aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's sixth Asta Cita mission, which focuses on development starting from villages to achieve economic equity and eradicate poverty.

“Ultimately, villages will not only become economically independent but also ecologically sustainable,” he said.

In addition to promoting food and energy self-sufficiency, Patria encouraged communities to continue fostering collaboration in village development and to engage the younger generation as local innovators.

He also called for stronger public support for village-owned enterprises and the Red and White Village Cooperatives.
