He inspected the dam project on Friday, which has reached 89.3 percent completion, according to a statement received on Saturday.
"We can expect this dam to be completed by next year. I ask all relevant stakeholders, including ministries and local governments, to closely oversee this project, as it is vital for food and energy security," he said.
Gibran said the Jragung Dam is also expected to help mitigate flooding in parts of Semarang and nearby areas.
He added that he also inspected the Terboyo Retention Basin in Semarang City, which is part of the national giant sea wall project — a 500-kilometer structure being built along Java's northern coast from Banten to East Java to prevent tidal flooding.
He noted that while the basin’s construction is progressing well, the activation and performance of its pumping machinery still require close attention.
"Overall, the progress has been quite good," he remarked.
Head of the Pemali Juana River Basin Management Agency, Sudarto, said the Jragung Dam construction is expected to be completed by November next year.
Built with a total budget of Rp3.09 trillion (US$180 million), the dam will have a storage capacity of 90 million cubic meters across a 52-hectare area.
"One of its main functions is to support food security by providing irrigation for 4,500 hectares of farmland and expanding the planting area by about 475 hectares," Sudarto said, adding that the dam will also supply raw water to Semarang, Demak, and Grobogan.
