Now, in the digital era, our struggle is to protect children in the digital space,
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has highlighted the vital role of parents as the first line of defense in protecting children from various threats in the digital world.

“In the past, people fought with bamboo spears. Now, in the digital era, our struggle is to protect children in the digital space,” she said in a statement released here on Sunday.

She made the statement at a performance event titled “PP Tunas: The Spirit of Heroes’ Day in the Digital Era” in Firdaus Village, Sei Rampah Sub-district, Serdang Bedagai District.

Hafid noted that online threats targeting children are becoming more prevalent, including exposure to pornography, online gambling, and cyberbullying, all of which can harm children’s psychological and moral development.

Therefore, she urged parents to actively guide and supervise their children’s digital activities by improving their own digital literacy.

“Parents must assist the government in protecting children from the misuse of the internet, especially social media,” she said.

Parental supervision, she added, cannot be replaced by digital devices or content filters.

“The internet offers many benefits but also carries risks. Therefore, every parent must become a hero for their family,” she remarked.

Regarding this, the government has enacted Government Regulation (PP) No. 21 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection (PP Tunas), to ensure a safe digital environment for children.

The regulation requires electronic system providers, including social media and online game platforms, to offer age-appropriate content, block harmful material, and provide accessible reporting channels.

Meanwhile, Deputy District Head of Serdang Bedagai Adlin Tambunan added that cultural approaches and communication remain effective in promoting responsible digital behavior.
